We're Closing Down

We're Closing Down

June 12, 2019

Prophecy Girl is closing on 30th June. I *really* don't want to say goodbye, but orders have dried up to almost nothing and at this point it is literally costing me more to keep the shop open than I am making in sales.

Sadly none of our products really captured people's imagination, and after 3 years hard slog we still have tiny numbers of followers on social media, meaning that virtually nobody even sees what I'm doing. I realise most of those people are probably bored of our existing range, but the reality of retail is that if the first stuff doesn't sell, there's no money in the kitty to make new things. There is no prospect of me affording to make new products this year, so it seems like now is the time to close the doors for good.

Prophecy Girl launched just after the Brexit vote in the UK, which has stifled business in a number of ways. With so much uncertainty on both sides of the Atlantic, people are understandably cautious about spending their hard earned cash. In the UK, the comic convention scene has also taken something of a nose-dive and at best could be described as "unpredictable"; with many veteran stallholders struggling, I haven't dared take a punt on an expensive stall. It's also incredibly hard to compete with massive corporations churning out cheaply made designs on a weekly basis (some of which have actually poached my fabric designs). Our shirts took 6 months to make, we simply cannot produce them on a fast fashion turnaround. We had no budget at all for paid advertising, up against corporate giants like Disney and "small" businesses that are actually considerably bigger than most of their fans realise.

I've attempted to ride all these things out, but the downturn has lingered on for so long now that it's just not possible to wait it out and hope things pick up.

Prophecy Girl never really got off the ground, and that's my biggest regret. I  thought we had something new to offer but sadly it hasn't worked out.

So long, and thanks for all the fish.
